Cheer Alliance 2017 Recap & Results

Competition season is officially underway, and last weekend it kicked off with the first big national invitation-only competition of the year; the Cheer Alliance Championship. This year’s event was held on Friday night, in conjunction with WSF’s Louisville competition. Cheer Alliance is different from other competitions in the way that they crown champions – the team that scores the highest out of all the coed divisions, and out of all the all-girl divisions, takes home the title of Cheer Alliance Champions, with the Grand Champions winning new Varsity All Star Fashion uniforms to debut at Worlds 2018. While most of the lineup was pre-determined based on the previous year’s competition results, up to three teams in each division were eligible to earn a spot in the competition by medaling in a “play-in” round, which took place earlier in the day.

An interesting new twist on the Cheer Alliance Championship was live judging, allowing competitors and fans to see who is in the lead in real-time, with teams getting knocked out of the “leader lounge” when a team outscores them in their division.

Another new feature of this year’s competition was the inclusion of the new XS Worlds division. Being a brand-new division, and the first big competition of the year, there was only one XS team competing at the Cheer Alliance – Cheer Fusion Perfect Storm. While no XS Coed teams competed this year, we look forward to seeing the division represented at the Cheer Alliance in the future, as well as the growth and development of the XS All-Girl division.

In the Small Senior division, Cali Lady Bullets, Rain Athletics Aqua, and Midwest Xplosion Blackout advanced from the play-in round to compete in the big competition against reigning World Champs ICE Lady Lighting, Cheer Extreme SSX, and Woodlands Elite Generals. While the competition was fierce, Woodlands Elite Generals were able to clinch the win in their division.

In Small Senior Coed, Brandon Senior Black was the team to beat. Their difficulty and technique this early in the season put them in the lead, outscoring play-in teams Woodlands Elite Recon, GymTyme Fever, and Cali Smoed. Their other competitors, ICE Thunder, Maryland Twisters Blackout, and Twist & Shout Diamonds, were unable to oust Brandon from the leader lounge, and Brandon Senior Black took home the division title in Small Senior Coed.

Moving onto the main event from the play-in round in the Medium Senior division were Twist & Shout Obsession and Woodlands Elite GI Janes, who took on the World Cup Suns and East Celebrity Elite Bombshells. GI Janes were the first team to compete in the division, and no other teams were able to outscore them and oust them from the leader lounge.

There were no play-in teams in the Medium Senior Coed division, so the competition in this division boiled down to the Stingray All Stars Cobalt, Woodlands Elite Black Ops, Maryland Twisters Reign, and reigning world champs the California All Stars Black Ops. Stingrays started out the division with a strong performance, but were quickly bumped from the leader lounge by Woodlands Elite Black Ops, who held the lead to come home with the MSC division win.

In perhaps the most anticipated division of the night, most of the division’s heavy-hitters were in attendance fighting for their first big win of the season. Cheer Extreme Senior Elite kicked off the division, followed by the current world champions World Cup Shooting Stars who took over the leader lounge after performing with minimal mistakes. Maryland Twisters F5 were unable to outscore the Shooting Stars, but the final team in the division, Cheer Athletics Panthers, performed such a strong routine that they not only took home the title of division champions, but also outscored all the teams in all the other all-girl divisions to become the Cheer Alliance 2017 All-Girl Champions.

The Large Senior Coed division was just as cut-throat as their all-girl counterparts, with Cali Coed advancing from the play-in round to take on the Cheer Athletics Cheetahs, Top Gun Large Coed, and Cheer Extreme Coed Elite. Cheer Athletics Cheetahs took an early lead in the division, and no other team was able to take them down. Cheetahs ended up with the highest score of the night, earning them the title of Cheer Alliance 2017 Coed Champions, and Cheer Alliance 2017 Grand Champions. Congratulations Cheer Athletics Cheetahs on your big win, we can’t wait to see you take the mat at Worlds in your brand new Varsity uniforms!
