Cheerleading granted provisional Olympic status

Today the International Olympic Committee granted provisional sport recognition to cheerleading, meaning that cheerleading has the potential to become a part of the Olympic Games in the future! The move came due to cheerleading’s strong youth appeal and ever-increasing numbers around the globe. The International Cheer Union, which is recognized as the global governing body for competitive cheerleading, has over 100 national federations and almost 4.5 million registered athletes. Cheerleading will now receive $25,000 a year in direct funding from the IOC, and will fall under a 3-year provisional recognition period, after which they can begin the 7-year process of becoming a legitimate Olympic sport.
