NCA College Nationals 2016 Recap & Results

Daytona Beach was filled with more than spring breakers last weekend, as the NCA Collegiate National Championships came to the Ocean Center & Bandshell, where some incredible college cheer and dance teams competed for the title of national champion.

University of Louisville were the big winners, when the all girl team won in the All Girl D1A division, and their large coed team was able to bring home the Coed D1A title for the first time in 5 years. Their biggest competitor, University of Oklahoma, brought home second place trophies in both divisions. University of Louisville’s small coed team, however, suffered from a stunt fall in finals, dropping them from first place to fourth place and opening the door just wide enough for North Carolina State University to come in and clinch the national champion title. NC State has really become a force to be reckoned with in recent years, and had hundreds of die-hard fans cheering them on this year in the bandshell.

In the All Girl DII division, California Baptist University brought home their fourth consecutive national champion banner, beating out second place finisher Columbus State University by almost 3 full points. Also brining home a fourth consecutive win was Davenport University, who dominated the All Girl DIII division and won by 1.75 points. Blinn College continued their tradition of excellence by winning a three-peat in the Small Coed DII division, beating out University of Central Oklahoma and Valdosta State University by over 2 points. Rivals Sam Houston State University and Stephen F Austin State University went head to head in the Coed DI and All Girl DI divisions, where SHSU won coed and SFA won all girl..

But the most-talked-about moment of the entire competition came during Coed DII finals, where reigning champions Navarro College and rivals Trinity Valley Community College battled it out in front of a packed bandshell. TVCC came out strong this year, placing first in prelims and holding onto that lead during finals, ending Navarro’s 7-year winning streak and earning them not just a national champion trophy, but also the honor of being NCA 2016 College Grand Champions with a score of 98.50.
