NCA College Nationals 2017

On April 6th and 7th, college cheer and dance teams gathered in Daytona Beach for an annual spring break tradition – the NCA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship. The highlight of this competition is the opportunity to compete outside in the legendary Daytona Beach band shell, in front of a huge crowd of cheer fans and beachgoers alike. This year’s competition had some big surprises in major divisions, along with some programs continuing their dynasty by bringing home more national champion trophies.

Within the past few years, the junior college division has been gaining popularity on social media and become known for housing some of the most well-known college cheerleaders in the country. For the past 16 years, only two teams have won in this division, with both hailing from the great state of Texas. The 12-time national champions, Navarro College, were defeated last year by Trinity Valley Community College. Coming out of prelims, Navarro had the highest score of the competition with a 97.62. However, TVCC was able to overcome Navarro’s score in finals with a spectacular performance in the band shell to win their second national title in a row.

In another fan-favorite division, Coed D1A, the battle has been between the University of Louisville and Oklahoma State University, dating all the way back to 2003. But this year, a different team was able to outscore both powerhouse programs to place first in this tough division. Texas Tech, a program that has become one to watch in recent years, defied the odds and was able to take home their first national champion title since 1982.

In the D1A All Girl division, the University of Louisville kept their winning streak alive, earning first place for the fourth year in a row, and their sixth title overall. Louisville’s small coed team also had a successful week at nationals, who overcame a third place standing in prelims to finish in first place during finals, earning them their 10th title in the D1A Small Coed division. Tough competitors Oklahoma State University finished in second, and North Carolina State University, who had been in first place after prelims, fell to third after finals.

There were some surprise finishes in other divisions as well, and we can’t wait to see if these new winners are able to defend their titles next year! View a list of results below from all divisions below, and check out photo galleries of select divisions here!
