Summit 2017 Recap & Results

We were on the scene of The Summit, the most prestigious L1-5R end-of-season competition on May 5-7 at Disney’s World’s Wide World of Sports complex. This year, 957 teams from 303 gyms across 43 states made the climb to the Summit, with 16 of those gyms walking away with first place trophies.

The Wildcard divisions competed on Friday for a chance to move forward in the competition. First-place and second-place finishers in the wildcard divisions all moved straight into Sunday’s finals competition, and teams finishing in third place moved into Saturday’s semi-finals.

Cheer Athletics came out as the big winner at this year’s Summit, bringing home 8 first-place titles, 2 second-place titles, and 4 third-place titles. One of their teams, Small Junior Restricted Coed 5 SuperiorCats, had an especially notable season, winning Cheersport Nationals, NCA All Star Nationals, and the Summit all as a first-year team. Another notable win came from their Large Youth 1 team, KittyKatz, who won their fourth consecutive Summit championship. California All Stars also had a good showing, winning 4 first-place titles, including their SSC4 team Blackjacks, who won their third Summit championship in a row.

Other teams coming home with multiple new Summit titles include Cheer Extreme (two titles), SCV All Stars (three titles), Woodlands Elite (two titles), Cheer Factory (two titles), Step One All Stars (two titles), All Star Revolution (two titles), and Cheer Central Suns (two titles).

The largest division at this year’s Summit was Small Youth 1, with 35 Wildcard teams vying for one of the top three spots in order to advance to the weekend’s semi-finals and finals competition, in addition to the 28 teams who received bids to semi-finals. Cheer Factory Inferno, All Star Revolution Honor, and Stars Vipers Python Princesses all showed off their impressive flexibility and impeccable timing in semi-finals, with All Star Revolution moving up from second place to finish in first during finals.
